When in Oz-land...

A trip for two to Australia, was Bipin's prize for winning the Brand Equity Quiz - India's most prestigious corporate quiz in the early noughties.

Foreign travel back then wasn't as prevalent as it is now. An all-expenses-paid, two week junket was unimaginable; my friend and his newly married wife were over the moon. So were all their friends.

In addition to the boomerangs and the didgeridoos that they brought back, there were also travel tales, none better than the one that epitomized Australian humour.

"Ten days into the trip, we'd begun to miss Indian food", started Bips

"Wandering around Sydney, we sought out an Indian restaurant, walked in, and ordered the usual dal-roti-kabab meal. While we were waiting for our order, an Australian couple walked in"

"We've come here to try out an Indian dessert. You obviously look like you'd know what to order better than us", said the man.

Roopa, Bips' wife, ventured, "The Gulab Jamoon is probably the most recognised Indian sweet dish. If a sugar rush is what you need, seek no more"

"You look the kind whose judgement we can trust", said the man, as the couple took their table.

"As the jamoons arrived and were laid on their table, I thought I'd check with our new friends if they liked it"

"And the verdict is... I asked, across the table",  recounted Bips.

"Where's the rest of the kangaroo?" came the repartee, in mock horror.
